Pet Owners and Veterinary Insurance Coverage

Veterinary insurance coverage

Pet insurance is an insurance policy that can reimburse pet owners for a portion of their pet’s eligible vet costs. Most Pet insurance plans allow you to choose your reimbursement level and deductible amount. If your dog or cat is ill or injured, after paying your veterinarian directly, you file a claim to be reimbursed by your pet insurer.

If you’re unsure how you could afford expensive vet costs, pet insurance can prove to be critically important. Treatment for serious illnesses can be a financial burden without a pet insurance plan in place. Depending on the insurance agency and the coverage options you purchase, pet insurance could cover the following:

  • All Illnesses & Injuries, like Ear Infections or Broken Bones
  • Hospitalization & Surgery
  • Emergency & Specialty Care
  • Breed-specific & Hereditary Conditions in Purebred Pets
  • Congenital Conditions
  • Chronic Conditions
  • Cancer Treatment
  • Behavioral Therapy
  • Diagnostic Testing
  • Prescription Drugs
  • Alternative Therapies* & Rehabilitation

Some plans could even offer pet owners optional Wellness Rewards such as Wellness Exams, Spay or Neuter Surgery, Training, Grooming, Vaccines & Preventatives & a lot more! These are often excluded by most plans, but some offer them at an additional cost.

When pet owners are shopping around different pet insurance companies, it is important to be aware of what type of coverage is needed, and what isn’t typically covered. However, just because pet insurance companies don’t normally cover something with their basic policy doesn’t mean you can’t purchase optional coverage. Some things that aren’t normally covered by pet insurance include:

  • – Preventive Care: Routine check-ups, vaccinations, dental cleanings, and other preventive care services. Preventive care can sometimes be purchased as an addition to some policies.
  • – Pre Existing Conditions: Conditions that were diagnosed or treated before the policy was purchased. This might not include hereditary conditions, so be sure to check your coverage options.
  • – Experimental Treatments: Treatments that are not widely accepted or approved by the veterinary medical community.
  • – Cosmetic Procedures: Procedures that are solely for aesthetic purposes, such as tail docking or ear cropping, since these carry no health benefits.
  • – Behavioral Issues: Costs associated with training or behavioral therapy.
  • – Breeder Fees: Costs associated with purchasing a pet.

As pet owners decide what type of coverage options they need, there are a lot of important factors to consider beyond just what is or is not covered. It is important to also take into account:

  • – Coverage Limits: Understand the maximum amount that the insurance will pay per year or per incident.
  • – Deductibles: Determine the amount you’ll need to pay out-of-pocket before your insurance coverage kicks in and what you can afford.
  • – Reimbursement: Know the percentage of veterinary expenses that the insurance will cover.
  • – Waiting Periods: Be aware of any waiting periods before coverage starts for certain conditions or accidents.
  • – Exclusions: Familiarize yourself with any conditions or procedures that are not covered by the policy.
  • – Insurance Agency Reputation: Research the financial stability and customer service of different insurance companies. It’s important to work with a trusted and reliable insurance agency when your pet’s health is on the line.
